”मेरा अध्यात्म या अध्यात्मवाद की तरफ लेशमात्र भी झुकाव नहीं था,” नैन उमरिगर कहती है, ”परन्तु मेरे बेटे कार्ल की बम्बई रेसकोर्स मैदान पर हुई दुखद मृत्यु ने सब बदलकर रख दिया। कार्ल एक चैम्पियन जॉकी था और उसके निधन से एक शानदार कैरियर का अन्त हो गया। मेरे शोकाकुल परिवार ने निर्दय भाग्य को कोसा। यह शून्य तब तक बना रहा जब तक मैं कुछ ऐसे लोगों से नहीं मिली जो परलोक निवासी अपने प्रियजनों से संवाद करते थे।”
शीघ्र ही नैन अपने बेटे से संवाद करने लगी और उसके भेजे हुए संदेशो ने नैन का जीवन सदा के लिए बदल दिया। खामोशी भी बोलने लगी थी और इहलोक और परलोक के बीच की खाई लुप्त हो गई और सिध्द हुआ कि हमारे इस जीवन से परे कुछ और भी है। खामोशी की आवाज़ में नैन का अपने बेटे से पुनर्मिलन और परलोक में उसके गुरू मेहरबाबा से क्रमिक परिचय का मार्मिक वर्णन है।
खामोशी की आवाज़ (साउन्डस आफ साइलैंस) में नैन अपनी आत्मा पर पड़ी परछाईयों, संशय और अविश्वास के बारे में निडर होकर बात करती है। उसे संदेशों की वास्तविकता पर तब तक विश्वास नहीं होता जब तक कि पर्याप्त मात्रा में प्रमाण नहीं मिल जाते। यह पुस्तक जीवन और मृत्यु की कई धारणाओं को चुनौती देती है विशेषकर मृत्यु के बाद के जीवन पर अविश्वास की धारणा को।
