Awakening to What Is by Dr. Kunwar Singh
Off the Beaten Path
A Kundalini Awakening, in the modern spiritual marketplace, is frequently sold as a product, a high-definition experience. It is marketed through the lens of empowerment, entailing extraordinary visual phenomena and promises the seeker a superior version of themselves.
Yet, when I found myself in the actual grip of this primordial force, I quickly realised that the marketers had lied. The awakening experience for me was, rarely, a controlled ascent toward a peak; it was often a systematic dismantling of the idea itself. Kundalini's Grace Revealed in the Light of Advaita is a record of how I chose not to participate in this erroneous glorification.
This divine energy is not a trophy to be won or a power to be harnessed. One needs to approach it with grounded sobriety.
Most literature on the subject is obsessed with the ‘how’. There are maps of the chakras, specific breath-work patterns and rigorous disciplines designed to jumpstart the Kundalini process. While these systems have historical validity, they often inadvertently reinforce the very ego that is seeking transcendence by giving the mind a new set of tasks to master.
My path was to give up on the ‘how-to’s and recognise that I was no longer in the driver’s seat. I had to focus on my lived reality rather than the technical theory. This book is my effort to provide a mirror for seekers who are in the storm of their own transformation without becoming a manual for how to get through it.
Surrender as the Only Strategy
I had been taught that if I worked harder, planned better and applied the right techniques, I could achieve any result. I tried to bring this same ‘achievement mindset’ to my spiritual path. I wanted to ‘do’ Kundalini. However, Kundalini is a force of nature that operates according to its own intelligence. Any attempt I made to manipulate or direct this energy through the small will of my ego usually resulted in greater friction, exhaustion and physical distress.
I had to challenge the pervasive obsession with control I had imbibed and found that surrender is not passive defeat, but the highest form of intelligence. I had to find, what I call, a state of ‘active non-interference.’
I also observed that the spiritual community suffers from toxic positivity, where only ‘bliss’ and ‘light’ are deemed worthy of discussion. This often left me feeling isolated and broken when I encountered the very real physical and psychological challenges that accompanied my deep purification.
I decided to speak candidly and in detail about what a ‘dark night of the soul’ looks like. I want to let people know that this is not failure but a sign of progress.
The Role of the Guru
Historically, Kundalini and Advaita Vedanta paths have been viewed as distinct, if not contradictory. The path of Kundalini is the path of Shakti - movement, vibration, ascent and the dynamic purification of the nervous system. Advaita is the path of Shiva - stillness, the recognition of non-duality and the understanding that the Self is already complete and unchanging.
The guidance I received from my Guru, Gautam Sachdeva, was often frustratingly simple:
“Don’t touch it. Don’t name it. Just stay as you are.”
These pointers served to strip away the complexity that my mind loved so much. When I heeded his advice and stopped trying to fix, label or direct the energy, it was free to do its work. This is what helped with clearing out the deep-seated impressions and traumas that kept me bound to a limited sense of self. My Guru reflected my own inherent divinity back to me until I could finally see it for myself.
The End of Seeking
The end of my Kundalini journey was marked by a profound simplicity. The fireworks eventually faded, the visions stopped and the energy stabilised. What was left was a regular human being who is fully present and no longer burdened by the heavy-lifting required to maintain a false identity. Life continued as always; I still ate, I still worked, I still interacted with others, but the ‘knot’ in my heart had been untied.
Kundalini's Grace Revealed in the Light of Advaita is a testament to the fact that the greatest spiritual achievement is to realise there is no one there to achieve anything! It is a book for those who are tired of the hype and are ready for the Truth. It offers a hand to the weary traveller, not to point them toward a destination, but to help them realise they are already home. Through the dual lenses of energy and awareness, it provides a glimpse of how the ego dissolves into the vast, silent ocean of Being.
